"Well-kept secret"
My husband and son (age 25) and I travelled to Cape Town in March and stayed at the Southern Sun Hotel in Newlands. Most people who visit Cape Town opt to stay either in the city, the Harbour area or Sea Point. I can recommend our hotel which was very nice, not too expensive and well situated for city, beach or winelands. A negative point is that there was no pool or gym there. It is also near the sports grounds for rugby and cricket fans. It is cheaper than the Vineyard Hotel (nearby) and the food is good. You will need to rent a car, however, as public transport is not recommended...
