May is the start of winter. We stayed in Tongabezi's fabulous Dog House. Unlike the river cottages, the houses are open to the outdoors and have no heat. Our first night there the temperature dropped to 48 (9) degrees. Despite the bone crushing heavy blankets, that was really cold. Thought my wife was going to kill me.We arrived around 3 pm while still in the upper 70's, canoed on the river past a number of hippos, had a fabulous dinner and retired to bed while it was still around 60. Woke up and needed to go potty. That is when the cold hit me. As I returned to bed, my wife hit me.
The next morning breakfast was wonderful. At 7:30 it was still cold but we were off for an elephant safari and dressed in layers. Our assigned guide, took us to the safari site and then to see Victoria Falls. He took us to Victoria Falls, curio shopping and, after lunch at the lodge, a game ride in a nearby game park. We then did the helicopter ride over the falls, more shopping and returned to the lodge to shower before the water froze and for another wonderful meal.
They offered to move us to a cottage but warned that it still would be cold. It was a bit warmer than the night before so we dressed for the cold, had our assigned butler lay a fire in the fireplace and got to bed before it got too cold. We did better that evening. The next morning we enjoyed breakfast and then were picked up ...Tongabezi was fabulous. We had a noisey hippo living just out of sight off the deck of the Dog House. At night, it left the water and crossed the trail just past the gate to our courtyard leaving huge, deep muddy footprints. Our butler assured us that it was too big to fit through the door and unable to step onto the deck.Tongabezi has activities for everyone. Had we stayed longer, I'd have loved to have fished the fast moving waters of the river. Just canoeing on it was exciting. The safety briefing included what to do if a hippo tipped over the canoe (guide said that it had never happened there and was like airlines telling you that seat cushions were floatation devices). Getting my wife into the canoe after that was a task but she then made a great lookout.
We highly recommend the Lodge.
