LUXURY TRAINS REVIEW - ROVOS RAIL CAPE TOWN SOUTH AFRICA
Recapture the romance of a bygone era on this relaxed and elegant 5-star train journey with fine cuisine, as some of the most varied scenery imaginable unfolds beyond the windows.
Rovos Rail operates 2 classic trains of 20 superbly restored coaches, half of which date back to the 1920s. With beautiful wood-panelled coaches, the trains may be hauled by steam, diesel or electric locomotives at various stages of the journey, carrying a maximum of 72 passengers in 36 suites (Pullman, Deluxe or Royal suites) .
In a series of journeys varying from 24 hours to a fortnight, the trains link some of Africa’s greatest destinations - from Cape Town in South Africa to Dar-Es-Salaam in Tanzania, offering scenic splendours as diverse as the game reserves of Mpumalanga to the majestic Victoria Falls; the desert landscapes of Namibia to the stark beauty of the Karoo; the lush canefields of KwaZulu-Natal to the magnificent Garden Route.

That Rovos Rail journey was amazing - Disappointed that we went through Bulawayo at night - it is only the return journey that stops there.
The only glitch we had was that we only had a single entry visa into Zimbabwe which meant that coming back in from Botswana we had to purchase another visa, if we had known or thought about it we would have been more prepared. We did not quite have enough US $ ($120 needed) so had to go back to Kasane to an ATM then to a bank to change to US$ which meant we we missed our plane from Victoria Falls - had to pay for an upgrade to BA etc etc....!! So maybe if anyone else has a similar itinerary warn them!
What can I say about the Rovos Rail Train? I think, decadent
extravagance, most enjoyable, something extraordinary. I will admit that I was pleased to get off at Cape Town, only because I could not keep up with the high living for much longer. I remember that I was told that you should always get people to leave the table wanting more, and the train journey left us feeling just like that.
