When I arrived at the airport (long distance roads in Mozambique are distinctly variable in quality), there were no taxis. I wanted a lift into town, to arrange a 2-day trip on a dhow to the islands before thinking about accommodation, but there were no taxis - a driver immediately offered me a ride without asking for any cash.

Having arranged dhow trip, I picked a place in my guidebook, and started walking there. I happened to walk past the Casa Rex, and thought it looked more expensive than I could afford and carried on walking further up the hill to somewhere slightly cheaper. The place up the hill turned out to nothing special. I ended up having supper that night at the Casa Rex, and really wished I was staying there that night. After the dhow trip, I made sure to stay !

There's a great restaurant with a wonderful garden and pool at the back, overlooking the sea, and a small path down to the beach. The rooms are amazingly good value - don't be afraid to ask for the more expensive rooms (still an amazing bargain compared to European prices) - I really felt spoilt when staying there.

The place is run by a couple who really keep up standards - this is not a case of somewhere run by procedures. If you ask for something, the staff are usually happy to help out if they can, and seem to know pretty much all you'll need about the area

For those in the UK, think of a country house hotel next to a beach, but for a very reasonable price, and you'll get the idea
